Abstract
Development of Provincial Data Capture Specifications for Hydrographic Features
Track: Mapping
Authors: Wendy Baldin
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) identified a need for mapping specifications of hydrographic features to support accuracy and consistency in the collection of comprehensive GIS data at a large scale (1:2,000 to 1:5,000). These specifications have enabled the Province of Ontario to guide and standardize the Conservation Authorities (CA's) in their design and production of large scale hydrologic and hydraulic surface models.
The specifications have defined which features should be captured, how they should be captured, and what accompanying attribution is necessary in order to produce high-quality, reliable and congruent data. Workshops were held to collect input and present CA data collection and processing approaches, technical capabilities, and potential future requirements were inventoried.
The final specifications document considered recent technological advancements and themes in the field of digital data capture and use, but was designed to align with existing MNR guidelines and authoritative data acquisition and capture specifications.
