Safety of flight is paramount for Avinor in Norway providing and publishing aeronautical information in both textual and chart based formats. Building an integrated data driven system to design and chart instrument flight procedures was essential in order to achieve the high volume chart production required to meet the demanding 28 day AIRAC cycle imposed by ICAO. To face this challenge, Avinor invested in an ArcGIS based chart production environment connecting the procedure design module and charting module to Avinor's existing ORBIT aeronautical database to increase efficiency and quality.
As Avinor continues its design activities and chart production, it must also look ahead to future regulations that impact the full data chain such as the EU's Aeronautical Data Quality (ADQ) standard. ADQ will shape the technology Avinor utilizes to collect and manage its aeronautical information and the use of GIS will play an important role for implementing this European standard.
