Based on the Basic Act on Promotion of Utilization of Geographical Information enacted in 2007 in Japan, the utilization of geospatial information as a measure for regional development is being promoted by the cooperation of multiagency in all government levels.
As an advanced case, the Mie Prefecture working together with country and its municipalities creates the topography data, orthophotos, digital terrain model (DEM) etc. All those data are operated daily as the prefecture's basis of information. The creation and maintenance of the geospatial data are completed by the ArcGIS based tools for a large amount of raster and vector data with the consideration of data production efficiency. A lot of measures towards the wide use of geospatial information in the future are under construction based on ArcGIS.
This paper explains the future prospects for effective use of geospatial information in a wide area by ArcGIS with several cases we conducted.
