Where We've Come

27 April 2011, a generational tornado outbreak struck the state of Alabama with widespread devastation. The Alabama National Guard responded with 2,930 Soldiers and Airmen, the largest response in the history of the State. This response was geospatially managed on a map hanging on a wall that had sticky notes attached. Since then, the Alabama National Guard has deployed a flex viewer configured to provide a User Defined Operating Picture which allows for electronic visualization of the Operational Environment and can better provided Situational Awareness to commanders on the ground, as well as in the headquarters. Plans are in place to implement an “Alabama-centric” version of Wisconsin’s Patriot Viewer in order to track missions and incidents so that we may complete the picture of the Operational Environment.
