We used ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS Online to support non-profit efforts combating cholera outbreaks in Haiti. Through mapping of outbreak areas and overlaying potential contamination sources, proximity to medical/sanitation facilities, population displacement, and infrastructure, we identified areas with potential high risks of additional outbreaks. The cloud-based functionality of ArcGIS Online allowed additional users to participate, and facilitated a collaborative international working environment. This allowed multiple teams to access near real-time data, enhanced file sharing, and the ability to build upon data from multiple sources. Without GIS, funding and resources would be delayed to areas that need it most. The next phase of this project is to increase resilience and sustainability for additional communities in Haiti.
This presentation will include how using a combination of Desktop and Online was utilized to meet project requirements, as well as the applicability to other projects working with third world nations, NGOs, and non-profits.
