Abstract
Visualizing U.S. Census Bureau International Population Data
Track: Census and Statistical Data
Authors: John Fitzwater
The Population Division of the U.S. Census Bureau maintains and updates numerous international demographic data products, including the International Data Base (IDB), the HIV/AIDS surveillance database, and maps with current year subnational population estimates. These datasets are valuable for decision makers operating in areas with populations at risk from natural disasters and complex humanitarian crises. A new initiative by the Census Bureau to support improved visualization of data offers a unique opportunity to develop tools and visuals of these international data products. Specifically, the cartographic features of GIS provide a medium through which many of these datasets can be mapped since they are inherently geospatial. Therefore, this presentation will demonstrate the usefulness of visualizing Census Bureau international data products through maps and discuss the potential of web visualizations to better inform decision makers operating in areas with vulnerable populations. Existing web products using ArcGIS Server will also be showcased.
