Abstract
Migrating Delaware's Official Transportation Map from CADD to GIS
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Authors: Jay Gerner, Josh Thomas
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) provides an Official Transportation Map to the public. This paper map is a cartographic product that is maintained using CADD software. DelDOT is currently completing a project to build a similar product in GIS to prepare for the future. The challenge is to take advantage of ArcGIS technology to better manage transportation data yet still produce a reference map with cartographic integrity.
The project team has identified an enterprise GIS strategy that utilizes ArcGIS Desktop to produce a new map. This map is easier to maintain, reduces data duplication, dynamically links to authoritative data sources, and enforces new quality control measures. It is the Department's vision that this new map will eventually form the basis for optimized web map services. DelDOT wishes to use the Esri User Conference to discuss Delaware's progress on this project, to share technical methods, and to hear colleagues' feedback.
