Abstract
Mid-Atlantic Environmental Assessment Application
Track: Environmental Management
Authors: Carmen Constantine
The Mid-Atlantic is the nation's most densely populated area with almost 30 million people. While some states are coastal and contain large cities, others have farmland and vast wilderness, and in some states natural resource extraction is a critical economic activity. The Mid-Atlantic states all have challenges regarding water quality and safety along with waste site assessment. Each state has some burdensome environmental challenges such as agricultural or urban runoff, industrial discharges or mineral extraction issues. ESRI ArcGIS Server with Flex API was used to design a geospatial application for EPA Region 3 that assisted with Environmental Assessment, Monitoring, and Prioritization. This platform provided stakeholders a means to identify sources of pollution and assess the potential risk that waste sites posed. It also assisted with identifying sources that impact overall environmental quality and allowed the user to drill-down through the data to further examine information.
