Abstract
Documenting ROI to justify GIS application life cycle
Track: Implementing Enterprise GIS
Authors: Greg Babinski
Enterprise GIS is expensive to develop, maintain, and operate. The 2012 King County GIS ROI study proved that in aggregate, the county derives a huge financial return from GIS. But how do we know the financial benefit of individual GIS applications within a local government?
This paper will describe a proposed methodology to estimate the future benefit and document the actual return on investment realized from GIS applications deployed within an enterprise GIS. The methodology used for the King County GIS application ROI analysis will be outlined and the results summarized. Lessons learned from the KCGIS study will be presented and recommendations made for a standardized GIS application ROI measurement approach.
This presentation will be of value to agencies to measure the benefits realized from their GIS operations and to help enhance confidence in projected ROI for future GIS investments.
