This presentation will cover definition and analysis of the alternative and renewable energy cluster for Indiana and USA. The cluster-based economic development is an established approach to recharge regional economies. The regions are also striving to be self-sufficient in "energy" by exploring alternative energy options. We will present spatial distribution and patterns of employment, establishments and other economic indicators for this cluster. Additionally, a framework for GIS-based decision support system for renewable energy development for Indiana will be presented. While spatial and economic analyses explore concentration, dispersal and past trends, a GIS-based decision support system can uncover the potential for renewable energy and supplement cluster development policies by facilitating optimization and trade-off analyses. This work at Purdue Center for Regional Development is partially supported by the Economic Development Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce and includes parts of doctoral research by Indraneel Kumar.
