Communications is one of the most important lifelines that influence emergency management. Emergency (9-1-1) call centers play a vital role, particularly during disaster situations. This study analyzes 9-1-1 call data of the Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC) for the City of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada using GIS and identifies location, call volume, and time of day comparisons.
We use hotspot analysis to identify locations that generate the most 9-1-1 calls. Using GIS to map 9-1-1 call locations provides an accurate picture of where emergency services are required and what areas are in higher need compared with others, both urban and rural.
This information allows emergency response agencies opportunities to plan: where to build emergency services facilities; staging locations for vehicles; peak staffing times; and identify potential problem areas in the community.
