Abstract
An Agricultural Facilities Management GIS Web Service
Track: Agriculture
Authors: James Herning
This project addresses the cost-effective use of GIS web services for a small specialty fruit grower. The development of a spatial agricultural management system facilitates knowledge transfer from the current farm site manager to ensure effective operations upon his retirement. The system allows for map-based queries and updates to the database from either mobile devices in the field or from desktop systems in the corporate office. Crop specific information on state regulated inputs can be entered directly from the field and are automatically converted to the necessary format for upload by clerical staff into the regulatory website. The system allows for crop specific tracking and reporting on harvest estimates and yields. By developing this system as a GIS web service the producer was able to increase operational efficiency and productivity through the familiar format of a website interface.
