Emory University's Robert W. Woodruff Library and Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL) are using GIS to study the spatial history of segregation in Atlanta. "Re-Mapping Segregated Atlanta" uses geospatial technologies to extract spatial features from historical maps and atlases and then links these features to datasets mined from manuscript collections and archives from our special collections repository. In order to examine the "impress" racial segregation left on the city, we created a geocoder for 1930 Atlanta and a rich geodatabase for the historic city. "Re-Mapping Segregated Atlanta" developed a multifaceted inventory of data layers that can be structured queried, and visualized on a digital map through a free, online interface. This combination of unique datasets and innovative technology will allow students, faculty, scholars, and the general public to visualize and analyze Atlanta in new ways.
