In 2012, Miami-Dade County was awarded the National Spatial Data Infrastructure Cooperative Agreement Program grant in the Category 3: "Expanding Use of the GIS Inventory System"
The project includes two objectives: 1) The inventory of existing GIS datasets in Miami-Dade County for the creation or completion of FGDC metadata, and 2) The creation of accounts in the National States Geographic Information Council's (NSGIC) GIS Inventory System (also known as Ramona) for GIS managers in the County. This second objective facilitates the quick dissemination of information and coordination of efforts during widespread emergencies of national or local scope.
This paper illustrates the technical approach to support the automatic harvesting of existing metadata, the coordination of tasks for the identification of sources of missing metadata, the standards and tools used for metadata creation and the results achieved in the first year of participation in the Cooperative Agreement Program.
