Abstract
An Advanced Linear Referencing System for Transportation in West Virginia

West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) Division of Highways (WVDOH) started utilizing its first GIS format Linear Referencing System (LRS) in March 2008 to manage spatial information for the 38,646 miles of public roads that it maintains. However, the functionality of the LRS is limited. For example, routes in the LRS are not directional, which makes it difficult for maintenance program users to track assets. As the LRS receives more attention across the Agency, it has become necessary to improve the LRS so various business needs could be accommodated. In April 2011 Esri and WVDOH initiated a project to develop an Advanced Linear Referencing System (ALRS). The ALRS is expected to be available in late 2012. Esri's Roads and Highways Extension will be used to manage the ALRS. This presentation gives an overview of the ALRS development project and shares experiences and lessons learned from the project.
