Since 1971 the US Air Force program "NoiseMap" has been the standard in environmental studies on aircraft noise. However, NoiseMap does not have its own graphical user interface, but relies on third-party interfaces that are designed to be used by sound engineers and noise professionals. The US Marine Corps has recently completed an effort to make NoiseMap range management friendly meant for noise representation on USMC operational training ranges and intuitive for less advanced users at range control offices by integrating it with the Range Managers Toolkit (RMTK). This presentation focuses on the design, development, and testing challenges faced and mitigated by taking an older program with legacy code to create an intuitive, user friendly interface in ArcGIS Desktop. This custom ArcGIS extension in RMTK is designed to assist in noise representation on USMC and potentially Army ranges that integrate other aspects of RMTK in operational live fire training.
