Abstract
GEOTECHNICAL MAP FOR THE GUARDA REGION (PORTUGAL) USING GIS
Track: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
Authors: Victor Manuel Pissarra Cavaleiro
An extensive set of experiments was carried out in the Guarda region to characterize soils, rocks and hydrographic and geotechnical elements. Several laboratory experiments were developed to characterize the physical and mechanical properties of several types of residual soils and rocks. ArcMap tools were used for georeferencing elements and creating a database with the properties of soils and rocks, as well as for generating a Digital Terrain Model with "3D Analyst Tools". Finally, we created a Geotechnical map and identified 13 geotechnical units, interpolating points to obtain a surface using 'inverse distance weighted technique' (IDW). These maps are useful for a better understanding of the appropriateness of soil and rocks for construction.
