Abstract
Using GIS as a platform for Community Geography
Track: Mobile GIS
Authors: Jack Reed
Work in the field of participatory GIS has included a wide variety of ways in which community members and organizations can engage and visualize maps and data. Traditionally, geographic data collection would involve extensive training and knowledge before non-technical users could map or collect data in an area. Collected data would be prone to errors or inconsistent reporting.
Recent technological advances have made available streamlined access to data capture using mobile phone and tablet devices in the field. Now anyone within a smartphone or tablet can collect data in the field, empowering community organizations in new ways using GIS.
