Abstract
Delaney Creek Floodplain Revision - GIS and Public Information Distribution
Track: State and Local Government
Authors: Autumn Schwab, Erick Sumner
When the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a preliminary Physical Map Revision for the residents of the Delaney Creek area of Hillsborough County, Florida, interdepartmental collaboration between Geomatics, Hazard Mitigation, and Communications provided a streamlined spatial solution to notify the affected citizens. Utilizing spatial overlay tools and Data Driven Pages, the GIS Team generated a spatially-driven map series providing citizens with parcel-specific information on Special Flood Hazard Area changes. The process evolved from manually matching different letters of notice with individual parcel maps, to a single-sheet mailing automatically produced from GIS analysis and cartographic tools.
These spatially-driven letters have received highly positive feedback from the Association of State Floodplain Managers and representatives from Charlotte, NC. Utilizing GIS and Data Driven Pages for public notice purposes can provide other local and regional agencies with an efficient, spatially-driven process that is not only cost-effective but provides a clear and concise citizen-friendly product.
