ArcGIS 10.0 and 10.1 functionality supporting vertical line segments offers a straight forward approach to 3D representations of subsurface geotechnical exploration logs by recording each log entry in a separate vertical line feature. This method enables effective management of large geotechnical datasets in a single geodatabase and seamless 3D visualization using ArcScene. Exploration data for more than 2,000 miles of levees in urban and non-urban areas throughout the Central Valley is studied in 3D along with LiDAR, multi-beam bathymetric, and helicopter-based electro-magnetic survey data. This 3D visualization provides greater support for geotechnical evaluations and the ability to better optimize further analyses.
