Abstract
New River Improvement Project: Challenges of Data Management
Track: Database Design and Management
Authors: April Villagomez-Roe
The New River Improvement Project includes an environmental investigation and construction of a 3-mile pedestrian walkway/bike path in Calexico, CA. The New River flows from Mexico into the U.S. and its waters are highly impacted by contaminants. Since Mexico has less stringent water quality standards than the U.S., most contaminant levels within the river exceed U.S. standards. An ArcGIS geodatabase was created to maintain and normalize the different formats of data provided from public and private sectors such as topography, boundary and parcel conditions, and environmental hazards along with other basemap and water quality information. Provided this information, it should be fairly simple to construct a bike path, but applicable federal, state and local regulations must be adhered to. This project applies to those who need to meet all applicable regulations when dealing with contaminated sites with various data sources and formats.
