Abstract
Overcoming Obstacles in the Development of DoD Compliant Geospatial Data
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Authors: matthew schulte, Joshua Swanson
Many challenges face the GIS analyst when attempting to convert data to the SDSFIE data model. Data developed for use at various scales, often with incomplete metadata, are frequently mashed together, resulting in volumes of project specific data with little metadata or processing lineage. Further complicating the processes are several Federal data standards and their compatibility with current software. SDSFIE 2.6 tools for ArcGIS 9.3 do not work in ArcGIS 10, driving a change toward early developments of SDSFIE 3.0. This has created an exciting opportunity for the GIS community to rise to the challenge, creating new tools and methods to enhance the conversion process and usability of the output. This presentation will discuss the conversion process, some problems associated with data acquisition, writing comprehensive metadata, and converting SDSFIE 2.6 compliant data to the 3.0 model through use and development of new tools and processes.
