A statewide assessment of charging needs in California has been produced that estimates the potential for charger usage by charging level and location. The model uses the Caltrans statewide travel model to estimate travel needs of Californians and determines how much driving could be completed in electric vehicles under different charging scenarios. The results show that a mix of charging levels is needed including DC fast charging, level 2 charging, and level 1 charging. Battery size determines the relative importance of each charging type. The results detail the location and potential usage of DC fast chargers statewide showing that a limited network of 200 of stations could provide a large benefit for electric vehicle drivers.
