Roads Services provides traffic, engineering and road maintenance services to unincorporated King County. To support the Roads GIS Roadway "everything is an event" data model, an application was developed to manage assets as events. Roads' staff needed an intuitive web application that would allow them to manage asset locations and attributes, and the Roads Asset Editor application was born out of that necessity. The Roads Asset Editor is built on the ArcGIS Server Silverlight API platform using a combination of out of the box tools, custom controls, geoprocessing services and database magic. Editing route events provides huge gains to the business but presented a series of complex problems, fueling the creation of a well designed and executed web-editing interface that leverages the Roads GIS linear referencing framework. The Roads Asset Editor application streamlines workflow, enables mobile environments, and eliminates data lag in an industry where real-time information is key.
