The USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) Mapper is a web-based mapping application built using the ESRI Javascript API. The Mapper helps users graphically search the nearly 2 million sites in the NWIS database. The Mapper interface provides various searching, map navigation, and informational tools to assist users in finding NWIS sites and related hydrologic data.
This presentation provides real-world examples of the advantages of migrating the NWIS Mapper from the Google Maps API to the ESRI Javascript API and how various performance and cartographic challenges were met using the ESRI Javascript API framework and functionality.
