The analytical study of rural settlements in respect of distributional patterns of population with special reference to size and spacing of settlement has great significance for any scheme of regional development.
The satellite based remotely sensed data, is able to provide accurate and the cost effective information and can be effectively used in the study of rural settlement. The Geographical Information System (GIS) provides the solution and purposeful means for integrating the spatial information derived from remote sensed data for a meaningful interpretation and analysis.
The rural settlements were studied and analyzed in 157 villages in the Hingna taluka of Nagpur district in central India using high resolution satellite imageries. The study provides interesting and useful information about the influence of the geographical parameters on the rural settlements. The results would provide vital inputs for evolving a development model for rural settlements by the local developmental authorities.
