Abstract
Optimising transport choice in a complex world
Track: Transportation
Authors: Steve Abley
How might a major international city double in size over the next 30 years? Where should the houses go, how should the roads, bus, rail and ferry services be connected and how might walking and cycling be better supported and integrated? Maybe more importantly, when and where is certain infrastructure or services needed? These are only some of the questions that were required to be answered to help achieve the vision for Auckland New Zealand to be the most liveable city in the world.
This presentation explains how the Auckland Transport Accessibility Model (ATAM) is through the power of GIS helping to lift the information veil on those questions. Combining GIS with 'accessibility modelling' provides a new way to answer how the vision for liveability can be achieved and helps to fill the void where traditional transport models ends, and new transport planning begins.
