US conterminous data sets are routinely updated and refined. Unfortunately this has not been the case for Alaska. National Elevation Data (NED) for the conterminous US is at least 30-meter resolution, while Alaska is currently 2-arc second data. Alaskan scientists routinely used a 300-meter resolution raster data set that was considered better than what was then available in NED. To develop new flood frequency equations for the state, higher resolution elevation data was needed. A comparison of the 300-meter DEM, Aster GDEM, USGS NED, and an in-house DEM developed for Cooke Inlet were compared to determine DEM suitability for use in Alaska's flood frequency equations.
