Abstract
Developing a GIS based asset/liability management approach for facility management
Track: Facilities
Authors: Robert Horsch, Eric Stetser
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) located in Bethesda, Maryland operates a campus which includes buildings constructed before the health hazards of asbestos were known. To continue conformance with federal guidelines and to manage potential exposure, NIH desired to have a comprehensive understanding of where asbestos is on campus and its condition. Using an application provided by the U.S. Department of State as a starting point, NIH built a comprehensive GIS-based application designed to gather information about the location of asbestos materials and manage the ongoing mitigation process. The application is now also being used in various decommissioning efforts throughout the campus.
NIH has carried out a comprehensive asbestos inventory for all buildings on campus, completing the effort in 2012. The presentation will describe collection, reporting and mitigation/decommissioning uses of this 10.1-compatible Esri-based desktop, web-based and mobile application.
