A study has been undertaken to develop digital elevation model for the purpose of drainage engineering using 3D analysis techniques in GIS for Uduthurai GN Division in Sri Lanka where several INGOs try to provide housing facilities which is hindered by annual flooding. Elevation information is not available for Uduthurai. The objective of this study was to develop a digital elevation model and create higher resolution contour map. In this study elevation data were collected by surveying using leveling and DGPS. Elevation data were downloaded and interpolated using the Spatial Analyst extension in ArcGIS 9.0 and TIN and digital elevation model were developed using 3D Analyst extension. Additional information of the area was derived from Quickbird satellite imageries through digitizing in ArcGIS. Contour map with the interval of 20 centimeter was created and final map with other information were produced.
