Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources

Economics: National Ocean Watch (ENOW) time series data describe six economic sectors that depend on the oceans and Great Lakes: living resources, marine construction, marine transportation, offshore mineral resources, ship and boat building, and tourism and recreation. Integrating data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Bureau of the Census, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, ENOW provides information on the number of business establishments, employment, wages, and gross domestic product for ocean-dependent activity in 448 coastal counties, 30 coastal states, and the nation. Used with biological, geophysical, and natural resource data, ENOW helps users understand what's at stake in decisions about the management, protection, and use of the resources of the coasts, oceans, and Great Lakes. This presentation will highlight examples of how ENOW and other spatial data can help tell the economic story about an area and show the effects of coastal hazards and management decisions.
