Analysis and dissemination of tropical storm information: a case study
Track: Atmosphere, Climate, and Weather

During hurricane season in the North Atlantic region, tropical storms can have significant damaging effects on the East Coast of the United States. To prepare for storm impact, disaster management and recovery, it is paramount to have an integrated process that includes: a) advanced accurate storm forecast (track, wind, precipitation, and surge levels) and, b) effective communication of operational observational and forecast data. To illustrate this process, we use the case of hurricane Sandy and its devastating impact on the U.S. East Coast in October 2012. We show how ArcGIS is employed to integrate data (observations and numerical model results), prepare analysis, and disseminate information in a timely manner.
