Abstract
Leveraging Python to Revolutionize the Vermont Town Highway Map Production
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Authors: Johnathan Croft, Kerry Alley
ESRI and the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) have developed a way to produce the town highway maps using 1 MXD, without using Data Driven Pages or Production Mapping's MPS-Atlas.
Through the use of creative programming with Python, and the development of a MXD that functions as a template, the production of the Town Highway Map series has become very efficient.
Each Town Highway Map contains a different layout with a different number of insets at different sizes and detailed mileage summaries for the town featured in the map. Through the single MXD and Python code, the maps can be generated directly from the VTrans road data and a page layout table.
The maps can be produced using ArcGIS Basic license level and Python.
This presentation will describe the initial issue that faced the VTrans and how the creative use of Python and custom scripting has solved the issue.
