The accessibility paradox or how to analyze accessibility for Sweden
Track: Transportation
Authors: Florian Stamm
Despite the fact that Sweden experiencing a fast urbanization the citizens accessibility to different amenities seem to decline. We spent more and more time on our daily travel, by average approximately 40 kilometers per person per day, the equivalent to 470 trips to the moon and back. One third of all the trips are by private car. The government's goal is decrease green house gas emissions and at the same time maintain a good accessibility for both citizens as well as companies. We used ArcGIS and Network Analyst to analyze the accessibility to different amenities ranging from grocery stores, medical facilities, and schools to work places. The transport modes included walking, cycling, private car and public transport. The result showing both accessibility and the change of accessibility within the recent years is presented to the government as a basis for future infrastructure investments and policy changes.
