This paper presents the results of the study undertaken in assessing the trends in the expansion of crop cultivation using GIS. The results shows, cultivated land increased by 12.49%, barren land 1.60%. Grassland, woodland and bush land decreased by -2%, -1.18% and -10.04%, respectively. There is a link between expansion of cultivation and loss of grazingland in the rangelands of Eastern Africa. Quantifying the socio-economic trade-offs of practicing cultivation in the rangelands is needed.
