Charities can benefit greatly from GIS because of the unique ability to measure impact and share results by demonstrating the impact of their work with their stakeholders and potential donors through web maps. The Trailblazer Foundation has been working in one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia, Siem Reap, for nearly a decade, primarily installing bio-sand water filters in addition to other sustainable community development projects in areas of great need. The web mapping application built for this project allows the client to analyze their impact in Siem Reap and share results, all in a web-based environment. Spatial analysis was conducted to compare conditions before and after implementation of a project over time, and compare to results throughout the province. The analysis showed an improvement in areas served, and the web map improved relations between the client and their stakeholders. An increase in donations to the foundation is expected in the future. This project is an example of how GIS can improve lives by identifying areas of greatest need and connecting those communities with the required resources.
