Land acquisition is the standard recovery action for projects taking habitat from threatened species. In the desert, the scale of new solar energy projects exceeds available land for mitigation; alternative recovery actions are needed. We calculate effectiveness ratios for spatially varying recovery action types in critical habitat, as compared to that of land acquisition. Our spatial analysis supports land managers in designing mitigation portfolios of recovery actions prior to site design.
