Abstract
Visualizing landscapes: A GIS model for Higuchi Viewshed Analyses
Track: Archaeology
Authors: Jesse Rouse, Trevor Harris
The landscape architect Tadahiko Higuchi laid out a series of indexes and subsequent composite models in order to consider our visual response to landscapes. The physiological focus and cultural examples of many of the indexes have made them popular in archaeology and cultural geography. This paper will review Higuchi’s indexes, outline a downloadable Toolbox that includes individual index tools and composite models, and discuss an example of an archaeological landscape modeling project.
