In 2007, the U.S. Geological Survey acquired 128-band hyperspectral imaging data of Afghanistan by airborne survey. The USGS processed and analyzed these data to produce two countrywide surficial materials maps: one of carbonates, sulfates, and altered minerals, and the other of iron-bearing minerals. In 2013, a set of 60 maps were produced from the hyperspectral data as part of a series of 1:250,000-scale quadrangle maps of Afghanistan, and are being utilized in mineral resource exploration.
