A GIS Approach to Charting Terrain on Instrument Approach Procedures

Human factor studies prompted the depiction of terrain information on instrument approach procedures to increase situational awareness at terrain impacted airports. Many general aviation airports fall below threshold criteria to add terrain information. As an alternative to expensive avionic displays, a combination of ArcGIS Python scripting and GDAL open source libraries created a series of tools to add terrain information to any instrument approach procedure improving situational awareness.
