The Life Safety Model (LSM) is a simulation model originally developed to aid in the determination of loss of life due to flooding as a result of a dam breach. The LSM uses a phenomenological approach to estimating loss of life by leveraging the power of GIS and integrating geo-spatial data with census data. LSM can be used to assess not only loss of life, but it can also provide insight into the timing requirements for evacuation as a flood progresses and provide support to emergency planning.
