Mapping Re-Greening in West Africa: A GIS Sample-Based Approach

To quantify the current extent of re-greening in Africa’s drylands, we developed the Tree Cover Mapping (TCM) tool. It utilizes a systematic sample grid to produce maps of on-farm tree cover using visual interpretation of high-resolution imagery. It allows the user to define his or her own sampling parameters to estimate tree cover within each sample unit. This mapping method contributes to implementing integrated landscape management to scale up re-greening and restore more degraded land.
