Experiences in Building and Retaining a Federal Geospatial Workforce

A GAO report released in 2014 estimated that 1/3 of the permanent Federal civilian workforce will be eligible to retire by September, 2017. For the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Geospatial Technical Operations Center, 41% of the permanent Federal staff will be eligible to retire within this timeframe. Over the past 3 years, 44 employees in that organization have retired. This presentation will include examples of challenges, and opportunities for reshaping the USGS geospatial workforce.
