Choropleth maps of socio-economic data often overstate the perceived importance of geographically large but relatively unimportant areas. For mapping such data, we set out to create maps that visualize data in proportion to its size, and tell the underlying story of the data. This presentation describes our cartographic journey to meeting these criteria, as well as achieving readability for the colorblind. We present the stages of development as well as resources we used to achieve our goals.
