We present an innovative GIS method to calculate territorial control in Sub-Saharan Africa, where only very sparse road networks are available and military operations largely occur off road. Based on Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) violent event data and other geographic data, we delineate territories using network analysis on a hybrid transportation network with both real road data and hexagon-fishnet-based artificial road data representing on-road and off-road movements, respectively.
