Abstract
A Stream and River Ecosystem Map for the Appalachian Region
Track: Conservation
Authors: Arlene Sheldon
We developed a classification and map of stream and river ecosystems in the Appalachian region. The product is intended to complement state-based stream classifications by unifying them into a single consistent system. The classification used six primary attributes to define ecosystems: size, gradient, temperature, hydrology, buffering capacity, and floodplain confinement. The results may be used to understand ecological relationships and inform aquatic biodiversity conservation planning.
