Abstract
Improving Oil Spill Impact Communication and Readiness with GIS
Track: Emergency Management

One of the most detrimental effects to coastal tourism following an oil spill is an ostensible perception of oiling which in turn conceals oil free zones. GIS can inform those counterfactual claims. This paper combines advanced oil spill simulation techniques with spatial analysis methods to clearly communicate impact location and severity to coastal communities. Results illustrate oil free zones that may otherwise be perceived as oiled and communicates implications for response readiness.
