Abstract
Using GIS to Estimate Waste from a Wide Area Contamination Incident
Track: Emergency Management

The US Environmental Protection Agency developed the Waste Estimation Support Tool (WEST); a GIS-based decision support tool for estimating the characteristics, amount, and residual radioactivity of waste generated by remediation activities after a wide-area radiological incident (e.g., radiological dispersal devices, improvised nuclear devices, nuclear power plant accidents). The tool enables the user to evaluate decontamination strategies and the resulting site-specific impact on waste.
