Using tabular and geographic data from a variety of sources, such as HCAHPS and Medicare, we attempt to determine whether area competition and proximity to other hospitals positively affect hospital performance on multiple measures, including quality rankings, spending, readmission rates, and complications. We hypothesize that average hospital scores will be higher in areas with multiple consumer options for sources of care, as hospitals need to perform better to gain or maintain market share.
