Abstract
Sunday, Bloody Sunday: The Effect of Ethnic Diversity on Violence
Track: Research & Sciences

Scholars disagree on the effect of ethnic diversity on violence. Previous studies measure diversity after conflict onset; these data often have significant error and are compromised by population movements. We correct this using the location of churches built before the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Places with greater diversity experience more deaths, and using census data without a strategy to correct for measurement error consistently underestimates the magnitude of these relationships.
